Mastless, The Bunk Diet and Smaller Is Better

One thing I like… self sufficiency. The Nor’sea 27 was built for self sufficiency. The mast lowering system is truly a beautiful work of art-ful engineering. I got the mast down, de-rigged and ready to carry off the boat. Then I went and found a few helpers. So nice to not need to waste people’s time.  I love the ease of handling everything on this boat – it is indeed such a sweet machine. Notice also in the second pic below how PERFECTLY the Radar and reflector fit into the bow pulpit when the mast is down. Everytime I do this,  I get a kick out of that.

I’ve been sleeping forward lately, which I think I mentioned earlier. But here’s a pic of that situation, it’s narrow, comfy, but narrow! Well, sorta comfy… actually, I’m really surprised I can sleep through the night on that ridiculously skinny mattress. I haven’t fallen off yet… c’est incroyable!

  1. Nice. I just realized how much windage you have aloft; I recall our Nor’Sea was a bit tender and didn’t exactly have great authority under power — does having the extra stuff up on the mast exacerbate the problem?

It is going to be a comfy winter … what are you planning to do to keep busy and put ‘beans’ on the table?

  2. I assume any windage up there has a negative effect, but I have nothing to compare it to. The Radar Dome and the Radar Reflector aren’t very high on the mast, which is helpful in that regard, and they are certainly not heavy at all. I have a hunch their affect is nominal. But it would be interesting to try sailing without them. I think the Nor’sea tenderness comes from her reduced beam. I find she goes over early and easily, but once over, is rather steady. Took me a little while to get used to, but I find her remarkably surefooted now.

I’m still plugging away with the web design. It’s been a busy month so far. And it should continue. I have a few clients that keep me relatively busy. If things slow down, I’ll seek out work, but for now the works just flows steadily without having to hustle for it.

  3. Believe me, Rich, Ben has ENOUGH beans…..!
